I have always known this but it’s really hit me hard this year. My mom use to always tell me that honesty is the key to happiness but the devil will always tempt you and make you think being dishonest will get you more attention and out of trouble. As an adult I have learned that honesty can prevent a lot of problems with family, friends, and your spouse. I know for myself I have been dishonest to people because of the fear of hurting the other person with the truth or even possible losing a friend or ending a relationship. Talking to other people about this made me realize that the truth will set you free because you’re not holding on to secrets that could make you irritable, angry, sad, or depressed. I recently, was honest with my wife about some things I had been holding on to for years. This was hard to tell her but once I released my thoughts and emotions I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulder. Even though some of the things I said was hurtful it made me realize that honesty can solve a lot of problems before they even become a problem. I have lost friends from being honest as well as family members not speaking to me however, I feel free and better about myself because I know I’m being truthful with myself. Those that can handle the truth and be with you at the end of all the depression, anger, and regret are the ones that were meant to be in your life because honesty didn’t destroy your relationship it made your relationship stronger.
